A POP email account is an account that retrieves messages from the server and stores them on your Hard Drive. The advantage to checking emails with POP is that you aren't limited by the space allocated to that email address on the server side, since the messages are removed from the server. The main disadvantage of checking email with POP is that you will only have an archive of your messages and folders on a single computer. If you are checking from multiple computers or devices (such as an iPhone), then you will want to setup your email to check with IMAP. Instructions for that can be found here. To create and check a POP account with ThunderBird, follow the below instructions:
1. Login to the cPanel for your hosting package by:
- Logging into the Client Area at https://customers.machighway.com/
- Click on Services > My Services.
- Click the View Details button to the right of the SiteBuilder package.
- Click the Login to cPanel button
2. Click on the Email Accounts module in cPanel.
3. Scroll down the page until you see a list of your existing email addresses. Click the Configure Mail Client link for the email address you want to setup in the Apple Mail client.
4. On the next screen you will see a list of email programs and methods of checking email. Near the bottom of the page you will see Manual Settings specific to this email address. This will have all of the information you need, less your password. NOTE: The details below are example information only and should not be used in your setup.
5. Open Thunderbird, go to the Tools menu at the top and choose Account Settings.
6. In the window that opens, choose Account Actions, then select Add Mail Account
7. In the Your Name field type your full name.
8. In the E-mail Address field, type your email address.
9. In the Password field, type your email password. Click Continue.
10. Thunderbird will attempt to retrieve your incoming an outgoing server settings for you. We actually want to manually edit the settings instead, so click the Manual config button.
11. The maunal configuration page will now be displayed as shown in the image below.
12. In the Username field, enter the Mail Server Username listed on the Configure Mail Client page in your cPanel (referenced in step 4, above).
13. In the Incoming field, nter the Incoming Mail Server: (SSL) listed on the Configure Mail Client page in your cPanel (referenced in step 4, above). POP should be selected in the second drop down box. SSL/TLS should be selected in the third drop down box.
14. Under the Outgoing field, enter the Outgoing Mail Server: (SSL) listed on the Configure Mail Client page in your cPanel (referenced in step 4, above). SSL/TLS should be selected in the third drop down box.
15. Once the incoming and outgoing setting have been set, hit the Re-test Configuration button which will make sure the server ports are correct.
16. Click Create Account.
Congratulations. Thunderbird is now setup to receive email via POP.
