Why do I get an "Index of /" or "Future home of.." page when I visit to my site?

If you see the "Index of /" page and a list of files that you've uploaded....
...it means that the first page of your site isn't named index.htm, index.html, index.shtml or index.php. The server therefor doesn't know which page you've uploaded is supposed to be the first page that your visitors see. Also, note that the server is case sensitive so you may have a page called Index.html or INDEX.HTML which will not work. The file name will need to be in lowecase.

If you see the"Index of /" page and a folder containing your site....
...it means that you have uploaded your site one layer too deep.

Incorrect file structure: public_html -> folder containing your site -> Site files.

Instead of uploading a folder containing your site, you will want to open that folder and upload the contents.

Correct file structure: public_html -> Site files.

If you see the "Index of /" page andnone of the files you've uploaded....
...login to your web space and make sure that you've uploaded your pages into the public_html directory. Chances are that you've uploaded your files outside of your "public_html" directory and they aren't visible to the public. To remedy that, reload your pages inside the public_html directory.

If you see the MacHighway "Future home of..." welcome page....

...it means that the first page of your site isn't named index.htm, index.html, index.shtml or index.php, or you have uploaded your site to the wrong folder on the server. To remedy this, reload your pages and make sure they are placed directly inside the public_html directory.
