1. Login to the cPanel for your hosting package, commonly found at http://www.yourdomainname.com/cpanel (yourdomainname.com should be replaced with your actual domain name)

2. Click on the Directory Privacy module in cPanel.

3. On the resulting File Manager Directry Selection pop-up choose Web Root (public_html/www) and click Go.

4. Navigate to the folder that you want to password protect by clicking the folder icon. This will reveal the contents of that folder.

5. When you have found the folder you wish to password protect, click the name of the folder to enter the password protection screen.

6. On the following screen, check the Password protect this directory: box

7. In the Name the protected directory field, type the folder name that you would like to appear in the username and password dialog box when someone attempts to access that directory. If you're not sure what to enter, just put the folder name in there. Click Save.

8. The next screen will confirm that you've set the folder for password protection. Click [Go Back] to return to the previous screen.

9. Under the Create User: section, create the username and password you would like to apply to this password protected directory. Click Add/Modify Authorized User.

10. If you need to add additional usernames and password, click [Go Back] and repeat step 9. If you're done, exit the Password Protect Directories module.

Congratulation. You've password protected the directory.

NOTE:When you try to access your password protected directory, keep in mind that many browsers will save the username and password in their memory so that you don't have to re-enter that information multiple times. This leads some people to believe that the password protection isn't working, when in fact it is but they have already entered the correct information.
