What is an inode?

The inode number represents the number of files (including email messages) and folders that you have uploaded to your server space. An excessive amount of inodes can hobble overall server performance, which is why shared hosting providers, like us, have a responsibility to make sure that each user maintains a reasonable amount of inodes in their account.

What should I do to reduce inodes?

Here are a few methods that you can use to reduce your inode use:

Backup and delete email from the server.

We have a support article on doing that here: Backing up your emails

Also, don't forget to empty the trash once you delete those messages!

Delete any backup files that you have on the server.

Your hosting space isn't a good place for backups, but we know that sometimes a file or 20 goes up and is never pulled down. Login with an FTP client, download those files to your computer and then delete them from the server. if you're not sure what you're looking for, look for files that end in .zip, .gzip, and .tar.gz.

We offer instructions for logging into your hosting space via FTP here: https://customers.machighway.com/knowledgebase.php?action=displayarticle&id=74

Move any and all video files to YouTube.

This will reduce space on your account, reduce disk I/O usage on the server (very good for keeping the server running optimally) and YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine on the net - so it wouldn't hurt to put your video there. if YouTube isn't your thing, you may want to host your videos on Vimeo.

We offer instructions for hosting video on YouTube and Vimeo here: https://customers.machighway.com/knowledgebase.php?action=displaycat&catid=41

Once your files are moved to YouTube or Vimeo, be sure to delete them from the server.

Move any and all audio files to Soundcloud

For the same reasons you'd move video, move your mp3s, Ogg, WMV files and more to Soundcloud. You can find Soundcloud here: Soundcloud

Once your files are moved to Soundcloud be sure to delete them from the server.

If you have a WordPress site ...

Login to your dashboard at http://www.yourwordpresssite.com/wp-admin. (Where yourwordpresssite.com with the URL of the site where you have WordPress installed.)

Once in, click Media from the menu on the left. This will show you all of the files that you've uploaded via WordPress.

Browse through those files and select the checkbox to the left of any file that was uploaded, but isn't actually in use on your site. At the bottom of the screen, select Delete Permanently from the Bulk Actions drop down menu and then click Apply.

Once you've followed these suggested steps, wait an hour and then login to your cPanel and review your inode usage from the left hand rail.
