Managing your FTP accounts

The most common method of uploading files to your web hosting account is using FTP (File Transfer Protocol). Most website builder software will use FTP to upload your site for you, or, if you created your own files, you can use an FTP client, such as FileZilla or CuteFTP.

But, before you can start uploading all of your pictures, you will first need an FTP account and credentials. Here is how you can set up your FTP accounts

Sections

Accessing your cPanel

In order to update your FTP password, you will first need to log into your cPanel. If you do not know how to access your cPanel directly, you can find out here.

Special FTP accounts

At the bottom of this screen, you will see your Special FTP Accounts. These are your default FTP account and your account to access your cPanel logs.

The "logs" account will allow you to access the cPanel logs that area associated with your account. You need to use this FTP account to access where they are stored on the server. You can find more information on the default account below.

The Default FTP account

By default, you can access your website files using the cPanel default FTP account. This account uses the same username and password as your cPanel account. While this can be useful in a pinch, it is not recommended that you use this account for general use applications.

For one, this FTP account will give the user access to all of your cPanel account files, not just the website files. If someone were able to access these files without knowing what they were doing, they can really case a lot of unrecoverable damage to your account. Not to mention that they would also have access to all of your emails.

Secondly, where this account uses your cPanel username and password, if these credentials were compromised, then they would have complete access to your entire cPanel account. This could be disastrous for your website and business. It is best to keep your cPanel credentials to yourself.
