When you attempt to load a webpage that does not exist, your browser will return a 404 - Website not found error. This will let users know that the page they are trying to view does not exist. However, the default page that browsers display is pretty boring. If only there was a way you could upload your own, custom 404

Create a Custom 404 page

You can create your custom 404 page using any HTML editor that you like. You will only need to use the file name of 404.shtml (notice the "s" in front). Once you have your html page created, you only need to upload it to your website.

Upload your custom 404 page

You can upload your custom 404 page using any FTP protocol you like, or you can use the File Manager built in to cPanel. You can find more information on FTP and the cPanel File Manager at the following links:

Upload your 404.shtml file to your domain Document Root folder. For your primary domain, this would be the public_html folder.

Testing your new error page

Now that you have your new page uploaded, you can test it by trying to load a page that does not exist. The easiest way to do this is to enter an invalid page into the address bar of your browser. You can enter example.com/nopage (replace example.com with your domain name). Your custom page should load.

Other error pages

There are many other error pages that you can customize as well.

  • 400 Bad Request
  • 401 Authorization Required
  • 403 Forbidden
  • 404 Not Found
  • 500 Internal Server Error

You can create an error page for each error using the same method mentioned above. You only need to name the file based on the error code (Ex. 400.shtml). Upload them all to your domain Document Root folder.

Limitations

If you are using a CMS (WordPress, Concrete, Joomla, etc.), this method will most likely not work for you, as most CMS have error page handling built in. Check the documentation for your CMS to see how to add custom error pages to your site.
