If you have email that you need to keep safe long term, you can create a backup of your emails from your cPanel or the Horde webmail client.

Backing up your email in cPanel

You can create a backup of your email using the cPanel file manager (or any FTP client, as long as it has access to your home folder). cPanel stores your emails in a folder called Mail (very creative). Within the Mail folder, you will see a folder for each domain added to your cPanel. Inside the domain folder will be a folder for each mailbox. You can create an archive of this folder, or one of the folders within, and save it locally, on your computer or in your cloud storage.

  1. Log into your cPanel account
  2. Access your File Manager
  3. Navigate to your Mail folder
  4. Right-click on the Mail folder, or the folder for the mailbox you wish to back up
  5. Select Compress from the drop down menu

This will create a zip or tar file that contains all of the emails for that domain/mailbox. You can now download the archive file to your local machine.

Restoring your emails

To restore your emails, you only need to upload and extract the archive into the folder that it was created in.

Backing up your email using Horde Webmail

Note: The Horde webmail client is no longer under active development and is no longer available in newer versions of cPanel. If you do not see this option when accessing your webmail, this is the reason.

If you are able to access the Horde webmail client, you can export all of your email from there in an MBOX format.

Once you are logged into the Horde webmail client, click on Mail in the upper menu bar and choose Export from the drop down menu. Now choose "Download into a MBOX file". Once the file is created, you can download the MBOX file to your local machine.

You can open your MBOX file in most mail clients, including Mozilla Thunderbird.
