How to change your FTP passwords

An FTP account gives the user access to the files saved on your web hosting account, where your website files are saved. If your FTP account is compromised, the user will have access to all of your site files and will be able to delete them and upload their own. Needless to say, they most likely will not be improving your website.

If you think your FTP account password has been compromised, you should update it right away.

Accessing your cPanel

In order to update your FTP password, you will first need to log into your cPanel. If you do not know how to access your cPanel directly, you can find out here.

Updating your FTP account password

Once you are logged into your cPanel, scroll down to the Files section.

Files section

In the Files section, you will see the FTP Accounts app. Click on it.

FTP Accounts

You will now see, towards the bottom of your screen, a list of all of your FTP accounts. To the right of the account you wish to update, you will see the option to Change Password.

You will need to enter the password twice, and the password strength must be strong enough to turn the bar green.

Once entered, click the Change Password button to update the password.

You can find more information on managing your FTP accounts here.
